So by now, I’m sure many of you have seen Erykah Badu’s new bad ass video where she gets butt-ass naked! BUCK YEA! There’s a lot of interpretative symbolism floating around the blogosphere—primarily the idea of stripping down to fearlessly bare one’s individualism against all societal norms.  I was having a conversation with one of my girls last night about baring your body and she said something like, “Yea, but not YOU Miss Feminist!”  Oh contraire, I must dispel the myth that “feminists” are against flaunting sexuality.  If anything, I am all for sexual liberation.  It just sucks sometimes that a woman’s sexual liberation is oftentimes filtered through the patriarchal framework that can then turn sexual expression into “whoring” or “slutty”.   I recognize the dangers of our society’s superficiality.  As an artist and an intellectual, it’s important for me to legitimize myself through my creative talents, work and words before stripping down.  Brains and beauty before body.  The last thing I want to hear is some bullshit from haters trying to discredit like, “Oh she only got there because of how she looks” or “Oh, it’s because she got that PHOTO up.” Please. I know I can’t control what people think, but I can control what I put out there in this world.  And I will make sure I always produce substantiating work.  Also in recognizing our society’s superficiality, I know how easy it would be for me to claim notoriety through sex and body.  I can wear less clothes, I can smile for the camera. Easy.  But this was never my mission to begin with.  Look at Tila Tequila.  She made a name for herself by exploiting her own body and sexuality, and now she can’t escape this.  Tila wants to make music and make art and even find love—but no one takes her seriously in these industries.  I refuse to fall into that trap.  I want to be influential with my brains not (just) my body.  This is the route I’ve chosen for myself.  Others may choose differently.  All power to them and the pursuit of happiness.

Erykah Badu is a bad ass female.  She got naked and it totally flipped the script—even in a patriarchal society.  She’s also well established as an artist and incredibly respected as a strong woman.  You don’t gota question her motives in taking off her clothes in this situation. So trust me when I say, “I wana get butt naked, too! I do!”  And I absolutely plan on doing so one day.  FOR ALL OF YOU.  That is a quasi promise.  Watch out now.

Lately more than ever I’ve been embracing the Buddhist concept of impermanence.  Simply put, it is the idea that nothing is forever.  Better perceived, it is the fact that we are always growing and changing—for better or for worse.  Part of growing and changing for me is realizing that it is okay to let go of things from the past—old “friends”, an old haircut, old clothes and most importantly, old ideas I used to hold firmly to.  Buddhism stresses that happiness comes from detachment—from material things to abstract ideas.  My growth becomes stifled when I say things like, “But that’s not me.  I would never do that. I can’t.”  That’s so unfair to the present me because I’m getting stuck on the yester-me.  Lately I feel like I’ve been going through a mid-20s growth spurt because a lot of yester-me ideas are being challenged and new revelations are being made. I’m learning something new about life and human nature everyday and I love it.

Some Buddhist philosophy on impermanence:

“Take for example the life of an individual. It is a fallacy to believe that a person would remain the same person during his entire life time. He changes every moment. He actually lives and dies but for a moment, or lives and dies moment by moment, as each moment leads to the next. A person is what he is in the context of the time in which he exists. It is an illusion to believe that the person you have seen just now is the same as the person you are just now seeing or the person whom you are seeing now will be the same as the person you will see after a few moments.

Even from a scientific point of view this is true. We know cell divisions take place in each living being continuously. Old cells in our bodies die and yield place continuously to the new ones that are forming. Like the waves in a sea, every moment, many thoughts arise and die in each individual . Psychologically and physically he is never the same all the time. Technically speaking, no individual is ever composed of the same amount of energy. Mental stuff and cellular material all the time. He is subject to change and the change is a continuous movement.

The various stages in the life of a man, the childhood, the adulthood, the old age are not the same at any given time. The child is not the same when he grows up and becomes a young man, nor when the latter turns into an old man. The seed is not the tree, though it produces the tree, and the fruit is also not the tree, though it is produced by the tree.”

Nothing is forever and that’s okay.  Change is on the horizon and I’m excited about every brand new day.  Thank you for reading.

I love you Mr. President and Mr. Vice President!

Nobody likes filling out boring paperwork, but the 2010 Census is here and I’m a huge advocate for everybody getting it in!! (No pun intended…or do I???) Anyways, the way it works is simple—if you don’t get counted, then you don’t exist. If you don’t exist, it’s hard for the government to pay attention to the needs of your respective community. Demographics collected through the Census are used to help determine funding allocations for services, programs, etc. For example, if there are 15 million Asian Americans in the United States, but only 2 million fill out their Census papers, then the government is going to say, “There’s only 2 million of them? Let’s give more money to __fill in the blank with bigger Census respondents__.” Yadidameeeaaan?? The thing takes less than 10 minutes! Spend 10 minutes to make the next 10 years count! (No pun intended, haaaaa!)

The 2010 Census came up with these AWESOME “Action Posters” for different ethnic communities to encourage people to fill out the census. The best ones reflect PEOPLE of a particular community to “Take action!” I’m scrolling through the website and the African American poster looks great, the Alaskan Native one looks great, even the Arabic poster looks hot!

Then I keep scrolling and I’m met with raw confusion. So confused, this shit had me rolling. Peep:

Bengali—a TEA BAG?!

Haitian—where are all the HAITIAN people at??? Hmmm…

Hindi—another TEA BAG?! They recycled the Bengali poster here…

Hmong—Eggrolls?!?! Damn, son. They couldn’t at least show a picture of Hmong people eating or making eggrolls?

Khmer—Tea time baby.

Korean—Tea time baby. I liked how they chose a different tea set.

Laotian—Doing what they do best…serve food?

Puerto Rico—Are these REAL Puerto Rican hands? (Also, is it just me or does that boxing glove look like a lobster claw?)

Thai—I don’t care what any of y’all say…TOM YUM SOUP is da best!!

Urdu—You look kind of familiar…

Vietnamese—Oh, my peoples! I like the decorations on the tea pot.

I won’t lie…I don’t know what an Urdu person looks like, but that tea pot portrait ain’t helping!! So the lesson here is simple: If you don’t want to be represented as an EGGROLL or TEAPOT in 2020, FILL OUT THE CENSUS!

Check out all the 2010 Census posters here.

Big ups to my homies at APAForProgress.org for putting me on.

***Added 4/4/10 …I was just informed that Urdu is the official language of Pakistan.  Urdu is not a nationality.  Thank you M. Wong for correcting me!

We’ve seen it happen more than once.  It IS possible for one person to change the world. Get like Fela:

The kind of artist I dream to be.

R.I.P. Fela Kuti!

This is a quick sketch I drew in between real duties:

Happy Tuesday!

People in the Boston area, check out this event about Women of Color addressing Media Justice and building sustainable creative spaces outside of the mainstream:

Click here or the image above for website and registration info.  It’s FREE!!

“This conference would address the concepts of Women of Color using current media
tools to build websites, blogs, podcasts, etc to address issues that
are essentially “blacked” out of mainstream/corporate media.
The conference would delve deeper into the idea of sacred space and the
benefits/problems with exclusiveness. Is it seperatism if WOC build
spaces that offer full visibility?

Does sacred space allow room for the “Hidden Transcript” to grow?

What is the Hidden Transcript?

Finally, is the idea or reality of sacred space merely a modern day
underground railroad for mainstream visibility for the issues of media
justice, literacy and consumption as these topics relate to women of
color? “

I’m in Washington D.C. enjoying the premature summer weather. I kicked it off with my girl Simone last night and her man DJ EyeAm spinning the bidness!!  I’m looking up current exhibitions at museums to see which one I should hit up today and I came across this jaw-droppin’ WOOOOORDDD!?!?!?!:

Inspiration for my previously mentioned Phoenix > Chickenhead Project?? I love it when the universe throws me signs to let me know I’m heading in a somewhat “right” direction in this life.  I can barely keep up with what’s going half the time.

Lunch at a vegan joint, In the Realm of the Buddha exhibit, off to my performance tonight at Almaz, then NYC first thing Sunday morning. Hello young world I love you.

This dude’s work is crazy powerful.  I admire his ability to filter a loaded social message in a style that is decodable by anybody.   Clear, recognizable and race conscious without being overtly snooty in that I’m-so-intellectual-I-can’t-even-talk-to-my-people-through-my-fancy-colloquialism snoot, yadidameeeeean!!!

HANK WILLIS THOMAS! Get with the program.

(Thanks to my girl Sheeeeeeen for putting me on!!)

I’ve been infused with a grip of positive energy and creative inspiration lately.  I’m coming up with a lot of ideas and can’t find time to do them all—which means I might be spending less time on the bloggyblog.  I’ll still try to post every day, but my focus right now is on internal development and practice of my craft versus the extroverted bloggy LOOK AT ME ME ME persona.

I’ve landed on a new painting theme for the season: PHOENIXES!  Which means for the next few months, I’m going to be researching, studying, drawing, designing and freaking the phoenix in many different styles. So far I’ve been reading up on them some more and breaking down the “Anatomy of the Phoenix”.  I’m dubbing this project the “PHOENIX > CHICKENHEAD PROJECT”.  Like the Oberlin Project, I’ll take you through my creative process from brainstorm to conceptualizing to sketches to finished products. I’ll drop blog posts about Southeast Asian culture, Buddhism and all things good running through my mind.

I’ve been studying the art of Southeast Asia and Buddhism—colors, meanings, deities and symbols.  Check two one two:

For a FULL BREAKDOWN of symbolism and colors within Buddhism, click here.

FAQ’s on the Phoenix > Chickenhead Project:

Q: Why the phoenix?
A: Because I’m tired of young girls growing up to be chickenheads, and forgetting that they’re queens and should be treated like queens—not like chicken shit.  The phoenix is a beautiful symbol of strong females rising to the top.  Also, it comes from Asian culture.  Holla.

Q: Where is your inspiration for designing the phoenix coming from?
A: I’m looking into the styles of Southeast Asian art and Buddhism because I’m Southeast Asian and Buddhist.  TRYNA PUT MY PEOPLES ON THE MAP, yadidameeeeeean!!!!

Q: What do you hope to accomplish with this project?
A: I’m trying to be more free, loose and experimental with this project.  I hope to discover a new style and create something that’s both visually exciting and meaningful.

Q: Is this a self-conducted interview?
A: Yes.

Love & balance.

P.S. Oh yea, I updated the “About” Page with descriptions of my categories and the “Quotes By Me” Page with new quotes! Holla.

In honor of National Women’s History Month…

Readership’s Hit List:

In her own words:

Check out the National Women’s History Project website here!!!

I try to stay connected with what’s going on in the world so that my opinions, ideas and work can evolve while remaining relevant.  CNN.com is a pretty comprehensive overview of global politics in a nutshell.  But sometimes, I’m appalled by some of the dumb bullshit that gets blasted.  No surprise—headlines are a reflection of corporate conglomerate interests. Check out today’s “BREAKING NEWS”:

Why?
Why?
Why?
A featured story, maybe.  But BREAKING NEWS?! WORD?!
With every tab I clicked, Tiger Wood’s Breaking News Headline remained highlighted at the top.

How many more people in Haiti died this weekend?
How many men and women got raped in the U.S. army this weekend?
How many people died from car bombs in Iraq this weekend?
How many more minds are corrupted with Texas’ new conservative curriculum?

How much MONEY will sports enthusiasts, corporate sponsors, golf competitors, television stations and other golf-related-people-I-don’t-know-about make from Tiger playing in the masters?

C.R.EEEEEE.A.M.!

I’m prepping for my trip and performance in Washington, D.C. this weekend:

Featured in the Washington Post: Click here!

I’m hella excited.  This will be my first performance in D.C. and I have a gang of old friends in the area I’m hoping to link up with!! I’m flying out Friday night, performing Saturday night, then driving up to New York on Sunday for more madness.  Oh yea, March is National Women’s History Month so we’re about to get it LOUD and poppin’!!

I been hellaaaaa lagging on the Midwest update.  I’m still trying to get better at taking more photos to document my experiences.  I took like 6 on this trip. Womp.  It’s a combination of forgetting to snap photos and just being plain lazy.

Check out these light shows at Detroit airport!! There was a dope “Tim Burton” themed part but of course I didn’t pull out my camera in time.  I almost missed my flight because I kept riding the sidewalk escalators back and forth:

CANDYYYY!

PEACE TEA!  They got people of color on the cans.  Kinda weird but cool enough to snap.

I don’t know y’all!!! Something about this is NOT as funny as it looks.  Considering the political history of the food economy and fast food chains in low socio-economic areas, they got their SERVERS looking and sounding hella ignant!!  Like damn, first you perpetuate obesity, now (the image of) illiteracy??  Fuck cheeburgers!

Anyways, overall my trip in the Midwest was unforgettable times.  All the organizers took hella good care of me (Thank you!!).  Painting unveiling and presentation in Ohio, then solo performance and workshop in Illinois.  I’d have to say my favorite moment from the trip was in Ohio, at the unveiling, when one girl came up to me and started crying!! WOOOOORDD!?!?!  She said she was so deeply touched by my painting (scroll down to see images).  I think it speaks to the culture of invisibility Asian Americans face in American society—never rightfully reflected in history books, the media or even artwork.  My painting will be permanently housed in the Third World House, where there are murals of other communities of color, but none of Asian Americans.  I’ve always believed in the power of art.  But in this moment I FELT it.  After a history of feeling invisible and unvalidated in American society, there is an incredible value in seeing a similar face reflected for marginalized people of color.  Like damn, in simple terms—who DOESN’T want to see themselves reflected?  Even on the surface level, it’s affirming.

I think I’m going to start painting more Asian people now. Holla.

Wooooowwwaaagagagadaaaayaamm!!!! Fierce, beautiful, wildly imaginative and insanely ill.  With feminist and “fuck the man” undertones. I love her.

Defy gravity:

I love videos that can still make me turn my head, literally.  Dope artistic vision and ill video concept.  I dig it.

THIS DUDE GOT HELLA STEEEEEEEZZZZ:

“Lost in Self”

Next level shit:

“Iraq2″

He creates ill motion with ill brushwork.  I dig it.

If you like an artist, let them know: Pablo Serrano

Me update: I’m back in the Bean now (and back on the bloggy blog!!).  Settling back in for the daily grind.  Will holla with trip updates and pictures soon. Thanks for reading!

Yeeeeeesszzh! The mural unveiling and presentation at Oberlin College was soooo on and poppin’!!  From the mural’s inception to the painting process to the unveiling, the entire journey has been over the top.  Thank you to my new Midwest fam for bringing me out and making it happen.  Now I can finally share photos online. Peep game:

A timelapse video about the project and more coming soon.

All photo props go to the lovely DOLLFACE.  She got you on all yor professional photo needs.  No amateur point and shoot here.  (Thanks MARY!!!)

It’s been a craaazy week!! Hella grind, with little sleep…and the best part has yet to come.  In less than five hours, I’ll be heading to the airport on my way to Cleveland to deliver my freshly finished OBERLIN PAINTING!! (It feels HELLA GOOD to finish this baby. Damn, hard work does pay off). My unveiling is part of the 16th Biennial Midwest Asian American Student Conference.  This year’s theme is “Following the Asian American Muse: From All Mediums to New Media”.Check out the conference link and all the ground breaking events happening in the MIDWEST (right??) this weekend.  I’m honored to be a part of this historical event bringing together pioneering scholars, artists and leaders from all across the nation…including old homie, Denizen Kane!! I’ll be there for the unveiling and doing a 20 minute presentation on Asian American activism and history.

After Cleveland, I’m flying straight to Chicago for a solo performance (Monday night) and workshop (Tuesday) at the University of ILLinois.  A campus newsletter features what I’ll be doing at U of Ill: here.

I may be off the bloggy blog until Wednesday 3/10/10 when I’m back from my trip.  Good news—I just upped my technology game with the NEW BLACKBERRY TOUR!  It just came in the mail today.  I don’t know how to use it yet, but for the first time ever I have internet on my phone (Ohhh, and it begins!), so between practicing the trackball and practicing my set, I’ll try to keep the webby world up to date with my trip.  Next week I will definitely have photos and a video of the finished Oberlin Project up.  Until then, thank you for reading and have a safe weekend. HOLLAAAAAAA.
